POSITION TITLE:     Market Assistant, Good Food Box MARCHÉ de la Boite de Bonne Bouffe

RESPONSIBLE TO: Program Coordinator, Sudbury and District Good Food Box

BACKGROUNDThe ‘Good Food Box MARCHÉ de la Boîte de bonne bouffe’ is a project of the Sudbury & District Good Food Box that aims to promote healthy eating through increased access to affordable fresh produce. It is a travelling market that will make short, regular stops in residential neighbourhoods that have limited access to grocery stores. The project’s not-for-profit model will allow market patrons to purchase a variety of quality fresh vegetables and fruit at wholesale prices!

POSITION SUMMARY: With guidance and support from the Program Coordinator, the Market Assistant will prepare for and implement the Good Food Box MARCHÉ de la Boîte de bonne bouffe project at the various market sites.


1.    Market Implementation

  • Safely use a supplied vehicle to retrieve produce orders from suppliers and transport goods to market sites
  • Count and sort bulk produce; adjust pricing if necessary
  • Organize and oversee market set up and take down (signage, tent, display tables, etc)
  • Supervise and assign tasks to volunteers
  • Receive and process cash/debit payments; provide change and receipts; balance monies collected with sales records
  • Provide customer service, answer inquiries and concerns
  • Provide sales records and revenues to Program Coordinator in a timely fashion
  • Lifting items 25lb-35lbs


2.    Volunteer Management

  • Assist with volunteer recruitment
  • Supervise and assign tasks to volunteers


3.    Promotion

  • Assist with creating and distributing marketing tools, social media content, public service announcements, etc
  • Participate in media interviews


4.    Evaluation

  • Assist with implementing evaluation measures and with data compilation
  • Provide feedback to the Program Coordinator about produce selection and quality, and operational policies and procedures



    • Possess an undergraduate university degree, or college diploma, or an acceptable combination of education and work experience
    • A minimum of 1 years food access programming experience
    • Knowledge of nutrition concepts and Canada’s Food Guide for Healthy Eating
    • Experience working with children and/or families
    • Proven customer service experience, teamwork skills
    • Cash handling experience an asset
    • Ability to work independently and under minimal supervision
    • Possess problem solving and decision making skills
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including afternoons and evenings
    • Experience with social media such as Facebook and Twitter
    • Ability to communicate effectively in both of Canada’s official languages
    • Valid G-Class Driver’s License


 If not previously obtained, the successful candidate must also complete the following training:

    • Food Handler Training Program Certification
    • Health Nexus It Takes a Village Online modules
    • Weight Bias training as offered by the Sudbury & District Health Unit
    • All training outlined in the City of Greater Occupational Health and Safety Policy



The remuneration for this position is $15 per hour. It is a contract position for 8 - 10 hours/week from mid-June to November 30, 2017, pending funding approval. Additional hours may be required for training purposes during the first two weeks of the contract.
